1. Defining News

What All Students Need to Know about the News
News: the presentation of a report on recent or new events in a newspaper or other periodical or on radio or television. This is Dictionary's definition of news, but if you were to ask me, news is just 'new' important information that people need to know. It is hardly any different from the definitions you would find on Oxford or Merriam-Webster. It's all the same. The purpose of news is to inform the people of events, such as tragic accidents, government public affairs, natural disasters and weather expectations, sports journalism, entertainment, and breaking news.

The legal definition of news establishes broadcasting television, newspaper, and radio as the usual delivery of news. Although that is true, easy access is a desire of this generation, which can mean knowing things that are going on (which is news) with a simple click of a button. The goal of a journalist is to be where the people are: social media. Social media has become a large holder of news delivery, with public feedback from the society through comments, video stitches, and reshares. Not all news is newsworthy, which is why media analysts observe and determine whether the story about the stolen books from the library or the story of the house that caught fire the previous night should be published.

I am not what my professor would call, a "news junkie," but the more courses I take for Mass Media, the more curious I become and the more my want to be educated and involved grows. News is essential, and that isn't an opinion. It's factual. We as a society need to know what goes on in our government, in our states, in our local cities and towns, and more beyond measures.
