“Suspect in murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley waives right to jury trial”
Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at Augusta University Athens, was found dead on Febraruy 22, in a wooded area on the nearby University of Georgia campus. Sources say that an undocumented migrant was accused of the murder of Laken Riley. (NY Daily News)
A friend of Riley's reported to the police their concerns that Riley had not returned from her usual morning jog. Later on, Riley's body was discovered behind a lake in a forested area near UGA's intramural fields.
Authorities later on determined the cause of her death to be asphyxiation and blunt force trauma after being hit several times with a rock. Jose Antonio Ibarra is a 26-year-old illegal immigrant that was arrested the day after Riley's death and body discovery, and was later charged with multiple counts, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault with intent to rape, obstructing or hindering a person making an emergency telephone call and tampering with evidence.
Investigators say this was probably a random "crime of attack," considering the absence of evidence proving that Riley and Ibarra had history before the murder.
Ibarra was also charged with a peeping tom offense for another victim at a UGA apartment on the same day of Riley's murder. Ibarra attempted to separate the two charges and fortunately, was unsuccessful. Prosecutors had admitted that they intend to seek the charge of a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
